The Liturgy of the Hours

This is what I use to pray in the morning and the evening: Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours.

It contains the official prayers of the church for morning, mid-day, evening, and night. It's a condensed version of the breviary, which is what the priests use.

I find that these prayers are enriched by singing. The following hymnal sets these prayers to music, including most of the psalms and many of the hymns: Worship, 3rd Edition

Signs and Symbols in Christian Art

Signs and Symbols in Christian Art is a fascinating explanation of the symbols found in religious paintings. Makes for great Sunday reading.

It's an old book - you can probably find it in your local library. Or buy a used copy from Amazon (try to find the large hardcover with color plates).

Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Compendium, issued by the Vatican, is a question-and-answer version of the CCC. Full Text. RSS feed.

But this Compendium, with its brevity, clarity and comprehensiveness, is directed to every human being, who, in a world of distractions and multifarious messages, desires to know the Way of Life, the Truth, entrusted by God to His Son’s Church.
– Benedict XVI
